CAMDEN — A city man who served time for a 1997 homicide has been arrested for sexually assaulting a woman at gunpoint at a motorcycle club’s headquarters in Camden, police said.
Authorities allege 34-year-old Antoywayn Lindsey attacked the victim around 2 a.m. Thursday at the Wheels of Soul clubhouse on the 800 block of Princess Avenue.
Camden County Police said the woman “was forced into a room and sexually assaulted while being threatened with a gun.” She eventually escaped and was found by police.
Lindsey was allegedly armed with two loaded handguns when he was arrested at the clubhouse later that morning, police said.
On Saturday, two men came to the clubhouse’s hefty metal door, but declined to comment. Authorities said the incident will prompt an investigation into the notorious club, which has a history of violence, violations and arrests.
Lindsey was charged with three counts of aggravated sexual assault and multiple weapons offenses. He also was charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault and making terroristic threats. He was held at the Camden County Jail on $400,000 bail.
Police said Lindsey has a prior conviction for aggravated manslaughter.
In 1997, Lindsey, then 17, pleaded guilty in connection with the city’s first slaying of that year, according to Courier-Post reports.
The victim, 29-year-old Richard Richardson, was shot dead Jan. 1 in the 400 block of Raritan Street. The shooting followed a bout of domestic violence involving Richardson and Lindsey’s aunt. A cousin of Lindsey also pleaded guilty in the case.
Lindsey was sentenced to 19 years in prison.
Camden County Police Chief Scott Thomson said Thursday’s incident at the clubhouse “will prompt a thorough investigation and inspection into every aspect of its members, their activities and the structure itself.”
The city closed the club in January 2010, citing code violations after a raid by authorities.
At the time, officials noted the Wheels of Soul had a history of illegal activities and that multiple shootings had occurred near the clubhouse.
In April 2007, Paul Mealey III, 35, was shot dead after a fight at the clubhouse spilled outside.
Four months later, a member of the motorcycle club and another city man were arrested after an investigation into alleged cocaine-distribution scheme based in the clubhouse. Both men received jail time in January 2010.
In July 2012, two men were wounded in a shooting near the clubhouse.
Perhaps the most notorious incident involving the club came on Thanksgiving Day in 1979 when 19 people were injured when fights between members of the Wheels of Soul and a rival motorcycle gang escalated into a shootout at a Woodrow Wilson-Camden football game.
