State rests in Warlocks motorcycle gang member’s murder trial

SANFORD —

State prosecutors have rested their case against David Maloney, the first of four men charged with shooting and killing three members of the Warlocks motorcycle gang at a VFW hall in Winter Springs in 2012.

Maloney is charged with murder for the deadly shooting at a VFW Post 5405.

Prosecutors say Maloney had been kicked out of the Florida Warlocks and started his own gang — the Philly Warlocks — before the two gangs came face-to-face at a charity motorcycle ride on Sept. 30, 2012, when the gunfire erupted.

The state said Maloney brought his group to the hall to start a fight and left after killing three men.

But the defense will try to build a case around the idea that the Florida Warlocks were targeting Maloney, and he was protecting himself.

The trial is expected to last the rest of the week.

Three other suspects — Victor Amaro, Robert W. Eckert and Paul Smith — will stand trial in the weeks to follow.
