Riders come from near and far to support Lansdowne

~Charity motorcycle ride a big boost for Every Kid Counts program~

As long as Lansdowne Children's Centre continues to hold its charity motorcycle ride "the right way," they can continue to count on support from an extensive network of bikers.

Mike Riddick, the Eastern Canada Regional Officer of the Southern Cruisers Riding Club, said that fewer and fewer motorcycle fundraising rides go through the trouble of arranging a police escort.

"That is a big positive for us," Riddick said.

More than 225 members of the motorcycle club travelled from as far away as Sudbury or Barrie to take part in the 10th annual Lansdowne Children's Centre Charity Motorcycle Ride on Saturday, beginning at the Brantford and District Civic Centre.

The Southern Cruisers Riding Club members represented about half of the more than 400 motorcycle riders that turned out for the cruise through Brantford, the County of Brant and Norfolk County in support of Lansdowne's Every Kid Counts program.

Riddick said the SCRC members will travel a long way if a fundraising ride is both police escorted and supports a particularly special charity.

"When it comes to supporting charities such as this one, this is where it's at," Riddick said.

Organizer Bruce Mackenzie said Saturday's turnout was one of the best the event has ever seen.

"The weather sure helped," he said. "This kind of support means a lot of big things for our Every Kid Counts program and it's great to see that this many people want to support Lansdowne."

The award-winning Every Kid Counts program provides assistance – usually in the form of a support worker – to allow children and youth with special needs to fully participate in sports, leisure and recreation activities in the community.

The event was aiming to raise around $40,000 to support more youth participating in the Every Kid Counts program.
