Biker club burns in Oakland County 3 days after fire at Detroit club

A large fire burned the Scorpions Motorcycle Club this morning in Lyon Township, three days after a separate club burned in Detroit.

The fire appeared to start about 6:15 a.m. at the club on Milford Road between 11 Mile and 12 Mile roads. No injuries were immediately reported, according to Channel 4 (WDIV-TV).

The separate Street Royalty Motorcycle Club burned to the ground at about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday on Dexter Avenue near Webb in west Detroit. Officials said Thursday that they've determined a gas leak was not the cause, but Detroit Fire Department continues to investigate whether it was arson.

Jennifer Urtel lives near the Scorpions club and heard an odd-sounding siren Friday while she was getting the children ready for school. When she looked outside, she could see flames in the distance. She hurried over because it appeared the flames were near her parents' home.

"It was probably 20 or 30 feet in the air," she said. "It's just really sad. They were a very good neighbor."

Urtel's mother, Ginger Huard, live just across the street and said the flame lit up the sky.

"It looked like a huge fireball," she said.

The fire destroyed the main clubhouse and damaged a smaller building next to it. Urtel said the club has been on the neighborhood for years and has never been trouble.

Members gather at the club on weekend and once a year on the weekend after Labor Day, they host a large pig roast party with live music.

They neighbors are invited, and many of them attend.
