‘He has a lot of enemies’: Police reveal a ‘list of names’ in Shane Bowden murder investigation – after the bikie was gunned down in his own driveway amid dangerous turf war

  • Shane Bowden killed in driveway of his Gold Coast home at 12.10am on Monday
  • Police said there are many potential persons of interest under investigation
  • Officers believe it is linked to his recent defection from Mongols to the Finks

Police have a number of potential suspects in the murder of Finks bikie Shane Bowden, who was shot and killed in his own driveway in the middle of the night.

Bowden was gunned down in the driveway of his home at Pimpama, Gold Coast, QLD, about 12.10am on Monday, with police believing it is linked to his recent defection from the Mongols to the Finks.

Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith said police are hoping for a break through in the case over the weekend, and confirmed they are looking at a number of suspects.

‘I don’t want to say where some of those inquiries are because we don’t want the offenders, well, potential persons of interest – the last thing is I don’t want them to have what we know,’ Detective Superintendent Smith told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

‘We are not limiting ourselves to bikies. We are talking to anyone that might have information or potential information.’

He said while the motive for Bowden’s murder is not yet known police believe it is linked to his outlaw motorcycle life.

‘He has a lot of enemies and it could be one of many things,’ Detective Superintendent Smith said.

Investigations made a public appeal for dash cam footage on Cox or Yawalpah road area, Pimpama, between October 5 and 12.

Police received a call to Bowden’s address at 12.10am after he was shot following a late-night gym session and forensic officers remained at the home throughout the day.

Two burnt-out vehicles were found nearby – one at Beenleigh and one at Ormeau –  a short time later.

Footage from CCTV cameras along the street has also been scoured by police.

Queensland Police Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith said it appeared that Bowden had been ambushed.

‘At this point we believe the victim came home from the gym and has driven into his driveway, the assailants have run in and shot him multiple times and consequently now he is deceased,’ he said.

‘He’s basically driven into his driveway, hasn’t even gotten out of his car and has been executed.

‘It obviously makes things harder when these types of gangs are involved because they have their own code of silence.

‘It’s important that people understand that these gangs are criminals… that survive on retribution, violence and threats and if anyone thinks anything otherwise they’re an idiot.

‘Nobody deserves to die in this manner but, you live by the sword, you die by the sword.’

Bowden’s death has sparked fears of a bikie war on the streets of the Gold Coast in a similar fashion to the one that raged in the mid-2000s.

His ex-girlfriend Trudi McPhee – who has been dating Bowden an on-and-off for 30 years – is no stranger to such feuds and has warned of how deadly they can get.

‘It’s pretty cowardly. If he had a gun, which he didn’t because he couldn’t or he’d do five years, he would’ve shot back,’ she said.

‘Of course the cowards knew they couldn’t go up and confront him face-to-face as he was a handy boxer and they wouldn’t have stood a chance.

‘All I know is this war is going to get bigger and women and their children need to be careful, because in this war they don’t care who gets hurt.’
