Lott: Fatal shooting at Columbia motorcycle shop between two biker gangs

(VIDEO) — COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) – The shooting incident that killed one and left multiple people injured at the Capital City Cycles motorcycle shop happened between two rival bike gangs, according to Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott.

The incident happened at the shop March 11 around 4 p.m., according to the department.

Charles E. Lilly, 55, of Beech Island was killed after he was shot and then hit in the head multiple times with a cane by James Hill, 58, according to Lott.

Hill has been charged with murder and first-degree assault by mob.

Kristopher Wheat, 36, was also charged with assault by mob, obstruction of justice and unlawful use of a pistol, according to Lott.

Several men can be seen on surveillance video outside the shop, which includes Hill, Lilly and Wheat.

Another man, Corey Booth, was injured in the assault and can be seen being pushed to the ground before shooting his gun as the other men jumped on top of him. Lilly was then hit in the head multiple times with Hill’s cane. The department said they believe Hill and Lilly are in the same gang as well.

When Booth shot his gun, he hit a member of his own gang, Nathan Hatch, in the lower body and two other men from the rival gang in the upper body, according to the department. Those men were Lilly and Raymond Reese.

Booth was also stabbed during the fight and has been released from the hospital. Reese and Hatch are still in the hospital, according to Lott.

“Both sides of this rivalry injured someone who was on their own side. This senseless violence caused James Hill to murder his friend, simply because he struck the wrong man and beat him to death.” said Lott. “These gang members were driven by violence and did not care who was hurt. That business is very close to the interstate and we are lucky that bullets did not hit anyone else.”

Lott didn’t give out the names of the two motorcycle gangs.

Hill is still at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and Wheat has been released on bond.
