Six bikers were arrested Friday in an incident that temporarily shut down northbound Interstate 580 just north of Carson City.

The incident began when a group of about 40 members of th Mongols motorcycle club committed traffic violations in Douglas County, such as running red lights, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said.

The motorcyclists continued through Carson City and were going north on I-580 at the north end of Washoe Valley when they finally stopped, Furlong said.

But there were groups of bikers all over the area, perhaps approaching 100 total, Furlong said.

Carson City and Washoe County deputies responded to assist.

The group were in the area for a mandatory Mongols motorcycle run, Furlong said. Some came from as far away and Southern California.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office representative could not be reached to get information about the six arrested.

ORIGINAL STORY: The freeway was eventually reopened. Law enforcement is monitoring the gangs in western Nevada, Furlong said.

Northbound U.S. 395/Interstate 580 was closed at the boundary of Carson City and Washoe County due to an overwhelming number of Mongol motorcycle gang members, authorities said.

Traffic cameras show the highway has reopened.

A group of Mongols were driving to Reno Friday afternoon and perhaps 100 bikers may have been involved, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said.

It started when someone pulled over a biker and escalated until the northbound freeway was closed at Eastlake Boulevard.
